Member Appreciation Block (MAB) Block #1

What is this? I want to do something special for my Facebook Group, so to celebrate the growth of this group for every 100 members I am going to post a new block.  The Facebook Group is already over 400 members in just a few weeks so I already need to do some catching up! My goal is to post a new block next Thursday and will continue that until I catch up with the membership numbers. Nothing would make me happier than to have to post two blocks every week!

Although I am posting these blocks as milestones for the Facebook Group I didn’t want to leave the followers of this blog out, that is why I have posted this information here also.

I have uploaded a one page PDF to the Files Section of the Facebook Group with the images included in this post.

Detailed unit construction information for the units in this block can be found in books: Nickel Quilts & Borders and Amazing Nickel Quilts

Estimated material requirements for a sampler quilt as well as a fun layout can be found in my Block of the Month: Color Me Happy Information in 3 sizes! Available in PDF or Print

Enjoy!

Catch A Wave

I uploaded a video to YouTube introducing a quilt project I am working on. I call it Catch A Wave and it is my version of the classic Ocean Waves quilt.

Here is the link to the video  https://youtu.be/ij1eR6TkCoA

I have always loved the Ocean Wave quilts and I had 2 1/2″ strips that were calling to me so I have started on this quilt.  Limiting my palette of colors to just blues, greens, and the shades in between. The quilt image shown below is the lap size.

The block is an 8″ block made up of triangles in two different sizes.  Ten 2 1/2″ half square triangle units in each block as well as four more 2 1/2″ half square triangles and two 4 1/2″ half square triangles.

I’m using different shades of orange on the opposite corners to add some sparkle to the quilt and to help hide  my less than stellar machine quilting abilities.

The simple pieced border blocks I selected for this quilt are the same size in length as the main block which allows me to sew the border blocks to the quilt blocks during the row assembly.  I love this construction method!

Please feel free to share the video link with any of your friends and quilting groups that you belong to. https://youtu.be/ij1eR6TkCoA

Steamer Trunk Treasure Quilt and the Cross Block

I’ve just uploaded to YouTube a video on the Cross Block for my Steamer Trunk Treasure quilt.  This is a quilt I designed several years ago to showcase a collection of fabrics I designed for Windham Fabrics.  The fabrics have sold out long ago but this quilt pattern is timeless!  Here is the link to the video https://youtu.be/sBkKnWUgHDk

Steamer Trunk Treasure Quilt USE THIS

This video has step by step instructions for making the Cross block.

Steamer Trunk Cross block

While making the sample block to show at the start of the video I fell in love with simplicity of this block and how easy it was to make.  It’s been several years since I made the Steamer Trunk Treasure quilt and at the time I was under a tight deadline (1 week start to finish) to get it done in time for Quilt Market and really didn’t have the time to enjoy the process.

Cross block

This time I took the time to enjoy the construction of the block as I was mentally making notes on how I wanted to present the demo of it and any hints that I wanted to pass on to a beginner quilter, or anyone making this block for the first time.

I think I will be making a quilt someday using just this block, it’s one of those projects that can be worked on between other projects when you just need to do some stitching and don’t want to do any thinking!

The Steamer Trunk Treasure quilt pattern is available for purchase from my website.

With this video I also announced a free pattern offer: When you purchase a book from my website you can receive a free pattern of your choice from any of my published patterns (retail value $10 or less) .

Write the name of the pattern in the Inscription area.
