Deli Geese Project – Block #17 – Gandalf

Here is block number #17 of the Deli Geese Block Project!

Gandalf

17 Gandalf

This pair of blocks is named after two of my favorite Wizards! Just in case you are not familiar with the works of J. R. R. Tolkien, Gandalf is the staring Wizard in the The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Block #17 Gandalf, uses the Bottom Units from Dark Flying Geese units.  Details of making the units are found here.

Bottom Unit from Dark Flying Geese

Bottom Dark unit

Gandalf uses:
A – four Bottom Units from Dark Flying Geese units.
B – two 5″ squares cut in half on the diagonal*
C – four 2 1/2″ squares
D – eight 2 1/2″ half square triangles of background fabric (light) cut from a 2 1/2″ strip using an Easy Angle ruler   (see picture below).
E – four 2 1/4″ squares

17 Gandalf

Cutting of the 2 1/2″ half square triangles from a strip of fabric.

Cutting of small triangles

* Technically you should be able to cut a 4 7/8″ square in half on the diagonal for this unit and you will end up with the correct unit size of 4 1/2″ square unfinished. I prefer to just cut the 5″ square in half on the diagonal and square up after the unit has been sewn together.  This is how I position the unit and ruler for trimming since you should only need to trim away from the larger triangle.

trimming of Shaded Four Patch

Block #17 Gandalf, will measure 12″ at this point and finish 11 1/2″.

This block as well as many others in the Deli Geese Block Project uses 5″ squares.  It’s a great block for charm packs, layer cakes and of course, stash fabrics.

Deli Geese, because they’re sliced !

Enjoy!
